Read and Voice for At-risk Children on 4.23 World Book and Copyright Day

Reading makes a full man. Helping children learn to love books and reading affects their entire life.

At-risk children from under-resourced villages are mired in difficulties. They don’t have the support and confidence they need to venture into society and get ahead.

On April 23, World Book and Copyright Day, China’s leading online audio platform Himalaya unveiled its sixth Reading Festival so as to promote reading as a habit among the public. Chunhui Children invited its six ambassadors of love, actresses Gao Ye, Kong Xuer’er, Carman Lee, Papi Jiang, Wan Qian and Zhang Xinyi to read to its village program children on Himalaya. It hopes to inspire in the children a love for reading that empowers them to go and grow.

WORLD BOOK & COPYRIGHT DAY

From April 14 to 27, users of Himalaya App may log on to the platform for Chunhui Children’s “Reading and Giving” event. The first 10000 audiences who spent 15 minutes each day for a total of seven days reading together with Chunhui Children’s loving ambassadors may donate a book to at-risk children with Chunhui Village Program.

Gao Ye recommended and read part of the mystery novel No One Innocent in 19 Years.

Kong Xue’er recommended the book A Good Day of My Own. “In the rural areas, many children experienced trauma in their early years of life. They are deprived of a happy childhood. I hope reading could enrich their life and bring them happiness,” Kong said.

Carman Lee recommended the book Little Women.  She wished reading could enable “rural at-risk children to see a broader world and appreciate the charm of knowledge”.

Papi Jiang recommended the book Classical Dramas of Shakespeare. “Rural at-risk children have gone through so much. They are lonely and withdrawn. Reading will open a window for them and motivate them to be themselves,” as she voiced for the children.

Wan Qian recommended the book 14 Decisive Moments in History. “I believe books will bring hope to the children and brighten up their life,” she said.

Zhang Xinyi recommended Kim Ji-young, Born 1982,a book that gives voice to unheard ordinary women. She believes that by reading the children learn, press on and dream big dreams.

Every at-risk child has his/her own dreams. Join in Chunhui Children’s reading and giving activity, donate a book to the children and you might help make a difference to their lives.

CHUNHUI VILLAGE

Chunhui Village is a philanthropic program Chunhui Children launched for at-risk children. In alignment with the local county/region’s minor protection models, the program serves medium/high-risk children living in underprivileged families. It recruits, trains and empowers local child workers. Equipped with child-centered inclusive development concepts, these child workers provide individualized emotional support for the children, build up their families’ capacity, and create a supportive social network to improve their resilience, increase their confidence and help them fit successfully into society.
